Whether you are a graphic designer or artist, selling your artwork or design is a rewarding goal. So many people say that selling artwork is a passive income stream. However, I would like to say that selling artwork or design isn’t a passive income, to be honest.
I am sharing my opinion about this topic with my honest experience. Even though, it is not a passive income, why I love to create my artwork continually.
While selling artwork can generate income, however, I don’t consider it passive income.
Selling Artwork is an active income
As you know, passive income is typically defined as income that is earned without actively working for it. In contrast, creating artwork and marketing it to potential buyers requires effort, time, and ongoing work.
Creating artwork requires creativity, skill, and dedication. It often involves spending hours or even days on a single piece of art, and the artist must continually create new work to generate sales.
Additionally, marketing the artwork involves promoting it through social media, attending art fairs, or using other methods to reach potential buyers.
How to generate income from artwork
While selling artwork can generate income, it is not a passive source of income. It requires consistent effort and dedication from the artist.
However, it is possible for an artist to create a passive stream of income by licensing their artwork to be used in other products, such as print-on-demand services or merchandise.
In this case, the artist would receive royalties for the use of their artwork, without having to actively market and sell their artwork themselves.
To achieve generating passive income from artwork takes a lot of effort and time. Also, you need to constantly update and create new designs and artwork. Of course, you must have solid fans and followers. So most of the successful artists mentioned it takes at least 2-3 years to get noticed for their works.
Nevertheless, I love to create my artwork as an artist, I had to search for and learn many skills and techniques to sell my artwork. Even shadowing my tutor’s path. Because that is my dream goal for 10 years later.
So here are general tips to start selling artwork.

Create a strong online presence: Establishing an online presence is crucial in today’s market. Create a website, social media accounts, and an online store where customers can easily find and purchase your artwork.
Promote your work: Use social media and other marketing channels to get the word out about your art. You can also participate in local art fairs, exhibitions, and events to showcase your work and connect with potential customers.
Provide exceptional customer service: Respond to inquiries and orders promptly and professionally. Ensure your customers are satisfied with their purchase by offering a return policy or guarantee.
How to find the niche and target market for artwork?
The target market for artwork can vary depending on the specific niche or theme of the artwork. But for example, if your artwork is a poster or wall art about travel, it would be people who are passionate about travel and exploring new places.
This could include:
Travelers: People who love to travel and want to remember the places they’ve been or plan to go to. Travel posters can inspire and motivate people to visit new destinations and make great souvenirs.
Collectors: Art collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the aesthetic and historical value of travel posters. Some collectors may focus on specific themes or locations, while others may collect a variety of travel posters.
Interior designers: Travel posters can add a unique touch to a room’s decor and make a statement. Interior designers may purchase travel posters to use in commercial spaces, hotels, or for their client’s homes.
Finding recent trends in artwork
As for trends in posters or wall art, it really depends on the specific design and theme.
However, there are some general trends you can think of.
Vintage Style: Vintage artwork that has a classic or retro look and feel is popular. These arts often feature bold colors, typography, and graphics.
Minimalist Design: Minimalist art that focuses on a single iconic image or landmark is also popular. These wall art often use simple, clean lines and a limited color palette.
Personalization: Many people are looking for personalized posters or wall art that feature their favorite locations or memories. Artists can create custom posters for individuals or groups, which can make a great gift or memento.
The standard size of artwork for a poster or wall art for selling
The standard size of a piece of artwork for a poster can vary depending on the specific purpose and location of the poster.
However, there are some common poster sizes that are widely used in the industry.
Here is the size of my artwork for a poster or wall art.
Once I create my artwork( Physical or digital), I use a Photoshop template for my artwork. I create 5 types of size files for artwork to list on the marketplace.
3:4 ratio-18 x 24 inches: This size is commonly used for promotional posters, event posters, and movie posters.
2:3 ratio-24 x 36 inches: This is a standard size for movie posters, concert posters, and promotional posters.
4:5 ratio-24 x 30 inches: This is a standard size for movie posters and is commonly used in theaters and cinema halls.
11 x 14 inches: This is a standard size for smaller posters and is often used for promotional posters, event posters, and music posters.
ISO standard paper size: A1 size (59.4 centimeters x 84.1 centimeters). Original size fit in A1 size, it can fits other standard sizes (A2, A3, A4,A5 and A6)
It’s important to note that these are just some of the most common poster sizes. You can always choose to create a custom size that suits your specific needs.
Additionally, the aspect ratio (width-to-height ratio) of the artwork should also be considered to ensure that it looks good when printed at the desired size.

Selling artwork is a full-time business
I often see people say “Sell your design and art for your passive income”
However, starting an art business can be challenging. Before thinking seriously about the right mindset.
Because it doesn’t just happen overnight. You can overcome obstacles and achieve your dream goals.
Here are some mindsets that can help you succeed in your art business:
Entrepreneurial Mindset: As an artist, you are also an entrepreneur. You need to have an entrepreneurial mindset to run a successful art business. This means being willing to take risks, embracing innovation and creativity, and constantly seeking new opportunities.
Growth Mindset: A growth mindset is essential for success in any business. This means being open to learning, willing to adapt to new situations, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth.
Positive Mindset: A positive mindset is critical for success in any business. It means focusing on the positive aspects of your art business and approaching challenges with optimism and resilience.
Customer-Focused Mindset: Your art business exists to serve your customers. You need to have a customer-focused mindset and be committed to delivering high-quality products and excellent customer service.
Creative Mindset: Creativity is at the heart of any art business. You need to have a creative mindset to produce unique and compelling artwork that stands out from the competition.
Persistence and Perseverance: Starting an art business can be a long and challenging journey. You need to have the persistence and perseverance to overcome obstacles, stay focused on your goals, and keep moving forward.
