How to Reduce condensation on cold days

6 ways how I learn to reduce windows condensation

I would like to talk about condensation, what I learned from the condensation problem, and how I practice reducing window condensation.

So, Have you seen water dropping on your windows on a cold day?

A damp look on the walls on winter or rainy days.

If you’ve seen this, this is condensation.

WHAT IS CONDENSATION?

Condensation on windows is common and natural and is often looked at as something you needn’t worries much about.

The usually happens when there are varying levels of humidity and temperature changes in the environment when the moisture in the humid air condenses in the form of microdroplets of water on a colder glass plane. The colder the glass, the more likely it is for window condensation to form.

Ok, if it is just like a fogy, I can bear with that.

However, in winter time or rainy days, my windows are crying every morning.

According to a window insulation consultant, “window condensation is much more than just a case of foggy windows blocking your view, it could be an indicator of insulation issues that need to be addressed.”

Condensation in the home can be a cause of damp and lead to unsightly black mold. It can damage the fabric of your home. Dampness and mold from condensation can also lead to health problems including triggering allergies and making asthma worse.

Furthermore, when left unchecked, condensation can cause several problems around your home, including dampness, mold growth, wood rot, and corrosion.

So, how to prevent and control condensation in your home.

  1. Use your extractor fan during and after the bath or shower.

  2. Make sure your home’s heating and cooling systems are functioning properly.

  3. Dehumidifying and Wipe Down Surfaces

  4. Double Glazing Thermal Break Windows & Doors

  5. Thermal Barriers for Windows

  6. Colder-than-Air Surfaces in Windows and Doors

  7. Choose the Right Windows and Doors

The above list is what most of the experts are saying in common. However, as a wife, there are some tips in daily life, so we don’t spend money too much on that.

Behind my story about learning from a nightmare of condensation.

As a wife, living on a budget, double glazing windows insulation is hesitant to spend money.

Especially, the people are living in a renting house. Also, most landlords, don’t want to spend money on that.

In my case, when I was living in a rented house, I had a big issue with window condensation.

Condensation led to a damp house and mold on carpet and walls. It was a nightmare.

My family’s health was at risk and most of the clothes, of course, damaged.

I wiped windows every morning and night. Some time I wiped the windows 3-4 times a day though. I used a dehumidifier to dry the rooms. I did everything I could to reduce condensation.

But, all my effort didn’t work. So I reported to my real estate agent.

Wow, what the agent said that?

I had to fix the problem on my own.

Even though specialists inspected the house and it was caused by poor installation of the building.

The agent said that ” The house was the good condition when I contracted the house at that time.”

Seriously? Hah!!

Long story short…

I replaced the carpet that had mold and brought a special cleaner to remove mold from the wall at my own expense. After the finished the lease contract, I never go to that real estate agent again.

Apparently, the house where I lived, has still a condensation and mold issue, which hasn’t been fixed.

I owned my house now. I learned from that experience, I am quite obsessed with reducing condensation every day.

How I am doing to reduce windows condensation.

To reduce the problem of condensation in my home, I am reducing the amount of moisture in the air.

1. Dry Clothes Outdoors

Even using a tumble dryer, winter clothes have still damp. I don’t dry them indoors. I leave the clothing hanger outside and dry them.

2. Clean and check the exhaust fan in the laundry room regularly.

I dust out the Tumble dryer vent and exhaust fan, before using it, and always air circulated, after finish the laundry.

3. Open a window when I cook.

My kitchen is an open space kitchen in conjunction with the living room. So I open the window when I cook. If you have a kitchen with a door, close the Kitchen Doors, so moisture doesn’t spread to other rooms.

4. Use Pan Lids When Cooking

keep a lid on pans when I am cooking

5. Regularly clean bathroom exhaust fan and close Bathroom Doors

Closing Your Door When Using Hot Water, I dust out the bathroom vent once a week.

6. Open windows in the morning, when I wake up.

When I wake up, I wipe the windows with a microfiber cloth dropped lemon spray or vinegar. After that open windows.

Normally, I buy Microfibre Cloth multi-purpose to clean all surfaces and windows.

According to Dr. Heike Neumeister-Kemp, ” Condensation can lead to mold. The only way to effectively kill mold spores is with white vinegar. The best way to get rid of eczema is with microfibre and vinegar”

When it’s raining or too much moisture on house, use a dehumidifier. If open windows on rainy days, moisture from outside, comes into the home. This time, a dehumidifier can be useful.

I bought “De’Longhi AriaDry Multipurpose Dehumidifier” to use for few years. It removed up to 14L of moisture. It is quiet and covers all rooms.

My final thought

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the relative humidity in your home should always be below 60 percent.

Ideally, we are living with moisture and somehow control the moisture to make a fresh living.

My husband said I am too obsessed with this practice but I am satisfied with my practice. I am living intentionally and always follow the value of living.
