Korean Food Adventure Drawing Theme
In January, Koreans celebrate the Lunar New Year, known as "Seollal," which is one of the most significant holidays in Korea. During this time, families gather to pay respects to ancestors, perform ancestral rites, and share festive meals. Traditional New Year's foods are often symbolic, representing good luck, prosperity, and longevity. Here are some Korean foods commonly eaten during January and the Lunar New Year:
Tteokguk (Rice Cake Soup):
Tteokguk is a traditional Korean soup made with thinly sliced cylindrical rice cakes. Eating tteokguk during Seollal is symbolic, as it is believed to bring good luck and symbolizes the gaining of another year of age. The round shape of the rice cakes represents the wish for a smooth and prosperous year.
Jeon (Korean Pancakes):
Various types of jeon, or savory Korean pancakes, are prepared during Seollal. The most common include kimchi jeon, pajeon (green onion pancakes), and bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes). Jeon symbolizes the wish for a prosperous and abundant year.
Japchae (Stir-Fried Glass Noodles):
Japchae, made with sweet potato starch noodles, vegetables, and sometimes beef, is a popular dish during the Lunar New Year celebrations. The long noodles symbolize longevity and the hope for a long and healthy life.
Yakgwa (Honey Cookies):
Yakgwa is a traditional Korean sweet made from deep-fried wheat dough, flavored with honey and sesame oil. These cookies are often shaped like flowers or animals and are enjoyed as a treat during Seollal.
Yaksik (Sweet Rice Cake with Dried Fruits and Nuts):
Yaksik is a sweet and sticky rice cake made with glutinous rice, honey, nuts, and dried fruits. It is a significant dish during Seollal and is believed to bring good fortune and health in the coming year.
Sanjeok (Skewered and Grilled Meat):
Sanjeok, skewers of marinated and grilled meat, are often enjoyed during Lunar New Year celebrations. The variety of meats and vegetables on the skewers represents prosperity and abundance.
Saengseon Jeon (Pan-Fried Fish):
Pan-fried fish, known as saengseon jeon, is a common dish during Seollal. It symbolizes abundance and prosperity for the coming year.
These dishes not only carry cultural significance but also contribute to the festive atmosphere of the Lunar New Year celebrations in Korea. Families come together to share these special foods and wish each other a happy and prosperous year ahead.
